I was very impressed at how affordable it can be to get a good quality workout surface wherever you happen to be working out. The place to get it isn't what you'd expect though. I was at a farm supply store not too long ago looking for a work hoodie and saw these 3/4" thick 6'X4' stall mats. I went back later and bought 2. They're a thick rubbery solid material that works great for Plyometrics on P90X and the other workouts as well. I'm limited on space, so 2 is about all I could do which is adequate for what I'm doing, but I say if you have the room, I'd go 3 or 4. I paid $85 with tax for the 2 which I'd say is a steal at that price, especially when they ask anywhere from $20-$50 for a yoga size thick mat.

Good call! It's awesome that you stumbled upon this money saving way to make an awesome fun mat. This actually one I'd the cooler suggestions the CrossFit website has. Glad you remembered to bring this idea up.

Okay, this is where the magic happens most of the time. It's two stall mats from a farm supply store giving me 48 sq ft of surface to workout on. I recently gridded the mat to serve as an agility ladder for Asylum workouts. Just having the visuals there has been nice. I threw the X down in the center for Plyo X and it really helps for form and agility over all. I think the long term benefits will be great. I taped the seam between the two mats with gorrilla tape for a stronger hold. They would slowly shift apart over time; the tape helps that. The grid is just regular neon duct tape; so far, so good, but I imagine at some point I'll catch and tear it or roll it somewhere. Eventually, I may tape and spray paint it, but for now, the tape works. If you have the room, I highly recommend doing something like this for a workout surface. Attachments:

I've done a little bit. I need to work back up to it. I slacked off enough up to losing my job, that some of my endurance faded, but I'm getting it back. It's killer though. I like the challenge.
